ABSTRACT

Democratic elements within the Kurdistan Islamic Union (KIU) are examined in this chapter. Progressing from an Islamic preaching group into a fully fledged political party within the humble democratic margin of the Kurdistan Region provided an opportunity for the KIU to practise democracy within its organisations and hope for a wider democratic practice within the region through its participation in elections of the regional municipalities and student organisations. Some of these elements, for instance the role of women in particular, are vital to the evaluation of such a progress, and are highlighted in detail.
