ABSTRACT

In this chapter I introduce the subject of the book: the ethics of eating animals. I identify the main thesis, which is that there is no general duty to be vegan. In my view, eating animals is usually bad, but only wrong for some people; for most, it’s permissible. The chapter also introduces the basic case for this view, which is that there doesn’t seem to be a good argument for there being such a duty. I then respond to two preliminary challenges to this argument: the first, that I could have overlooked relevant reasoning; second, that the problem is our current moral frameworks. The chapter concludes with an overview of the book and some personal reflections on the project.
