ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses different types of allies and differentiates between an ally and an accomplice. Some critics argue that allyship is limiting because it often stops short of truly dismantling structures of oppression. Instead, they call for accomplices, who are willing to create structural change even at cost to themselves. Whether allies or accomplices, chances are people in our lives will make missteps, and so the chapter also explores how to navigate our pain when allies and/or mentors disappoint us. It invites self-reflection on trust and offers guidance to navigate broken trust.
