ABSTRACT

The remainder of this chapter briefly sketches the outlines of a “treatment strategy” for helping the system go straight. It cannot be reiterated too frequently that these proposals are not offered merely as a means of improving the system. The National Academy of Sciences panel on incarceration suggests that policy makers take steps to “provide better conditions for those in prison” and “improve the experience of incarcerated men and women and reduce the unnecessary harm to their families and communities.” This conclusion presents some closing thoughts on the concepts covered in the preceding chapters of this book. The book reviews how poverty and inequality were sources of crime, and that inequality breeds crimes of greed by the wealthy. It explains why prisons were a source of crime. Prison reform is necessary because the scandal of our prisons has been amply documented for decades.
