ABSTRACT

Talent management strategy is often developed based on talent processes and the employee life cycle. These activities can add value, but only when situated within the context of the organisational goals and the organisational culture. This chapter introduces the Talent CompassTM, a talent liberation tool to develop a system-wide view of the talent risks within an organisation, function or team. The Talent Compass starts with understanding the current organisational goals together with the possible future scenarios. Current talent supply and future talent demands are then explored, considering sources of talent within and beyond the traditional boundaries of the organisation and the contribution of each definition of talent. The final three parts of the talent system are the extent of matching individual and organisation needs, the informal talent climate and the formal talent processes. A review of all of these enables the priority talent risks to be identified and a plan developed to address them. The chapter concludes with coaching questions to help the reader to apply what they have read.
