ABSTRACT

Leaders are at the front line of talent liberation. There is scope for them to be liberators of talent, even if they are operating within an organisation that does not fully embrace this approach. This chapter starts by reinforcing the role that leaders can have to promote all five of the premises of talent liberation. The rest of the chapter focuses on how they can release individual and team talent, helping everyone to be at their Personal Best as well as supporting those with High Potential. Five habits of leaders as liberators are introduced: knowledge of your team; catalyst for growth; feedback and feedforward; a look to the future and work in partnership. Each is described with reference to research evidence, mini case studies and practical tools that can be used. The chapter can be used by leaders to help them to improve, and it can also be used by HR or learning professionals to shape a programme to encourage more leaders to be liberators of talent. The chapter concludes with coaching questions to help the reader to apply what they have read.
