ABSTRACT

This chapter features the story of a teacher who is asked in class by a student, ‘Does your boyfriend have a big shlong?’ The teacher was left speechless, unsure and unable to respond. The story highlights how our unknown self and our underlying emotion compel us to follow a script. The teacher, at that moment, had a script to follow, but it did not align with the script of the student’s story. The teacher was faced with choices about how to handle the situation, which meant that their stories could not continue to unfold as they ‘ought’ to have. A story captures an experience within a much larger story and while one person is living out their story’s script, so are all the other actors that weave in and out of a story. This chapter highlights that scripts for the future can be rewritten.
