ABSTRACT

This chapter outlines a specific process of reflexivity that can form a framework for teachers to work through collectively. There are four stages: sharing a story; identifying strengths in the story; sharing perspectives of and with others, and collectively inquiring into the layers of the story. An example of the process in action is provided through the initial recounting of a story featuring discord related to a school’s uniform policy. In the inquiry stage, the teacher’s deeper beliefs, assumptions and emotions tied to the uniform policy were discovered. Collaboratively they were able to ask themselves and deeply consider: why do we have a uniform policy? Whose interests are we serving? Who enforces it? Do we enforce it equally? Why or why not? Such stories and inquiry provide fertile ground for transformation.
