ABSTRACT

George Wallis practised as an artist and art educator in Wolverhampton from 1827 to 1832; he then moved to Manchester and attended the Royal Manchester Institution. In 1845, George Wallis organised the Industrial Art Exhibition at the Manchester Royal Institution. Wallis was reminded that he was subject to orders from London, so he eventually resigned as master with his reasons explained in ‘A Farewell Letter to the Council’. The People’s Journal was the right sort of periodical to publish this type of article. In 1843, he was appointed Headmaster of the Spitalfields School of Design, but this was short-lived as by 1844 he was headmaster of Manchester School of Design. The era of monopolies would appear to be fast coming to a close, alike in Literature, Art, and Science, as in Commerce.
