Despite all the attention which his works have received, the political thought of Herbert Marcuse has seldom been extensively considered from a liberal point of view. 1 This is more than a little surprising since he offers a sweeping attack upon liberal theory and liberal-democratic society in the course of presenting his own alternatives.
