ABSTRACT

Children who have high self-esteem will be less dependent on their parents, grow up with feelings of satisfaction and confidence and develop positive relationships with others around them. This is what all parents want for their children but it only happens with planning and practice by parents. For small children, when learning new behaviour, they need to be rewarded immediately to learn, but as they grow older most children learn to work for longer to achieve rewards such as working for exam success or developing complex skills that need practice and take time to learn. Rewarding a child for appropriate behaviour is showing that parents approve of that behaviour. Children who are rewarded for their behaviour become less dependent on their parents’ praise and rewards as they grow older and become more independent and self-motivated. When parents reward children for good behaviour, they will also be rewarded by their children.
