ABSTRACT

This conclusion presents some closing thoughts on the concepts covered in the preceding chapters of this book. The book explores a toolkit of the most important things that parents can do to support their children’s development. These are useful, both for parents facing everyday challenges and for parents with children with developmental or other difficulties that persist across children’s early years. The book describes ways of becoming more effective in helping children to follow instructions. Parents can find it hard to learn to ignore effectively, however, as long as children are generally in the “sunshine of positive attention”, ignoring is a powerful tool. The book summarises ways to teach new behaviours to children. It examines ways for dealing with problem behaviour or serious rule infringements such as aggression. Behavioural challenges are common among young children, with phrases like the “terrible twos” or “tantrumming three-year-olds” often heard.
