ABSTRACT

The lessons from how organisations responded to new technologies in the past can help in preparing business leader's organisation. In a well-known study, the relationship between organisational structure and organisational performance was considered. The study showed that there are specific organisational designs linked to specific types of technologies. The emphasis of the early studies in the 1950s and 1960s was on how technology influenced organisational structures and production processes, especially in relation to manufacturing technology. Sociomateriality is a theoretical concept that helps researchers understands how technologies and organisations interact. Organisations are created by “material forms and spaces through which humans act and interact”. Information technologies (IT) can redistribute knowledge, resources, and conventions in organisations, but today, IT can also (re)create new knowledge and information technologies. The increased availability of advanced artificial within organisations, resulting in increased automation of tasks and jobs, leads to an algorithmic organisation built around smart algorithms.
