ABSTRACT

This chapter outlines the different ways in which organizations are constructed and how the authors, as HRD professionals, can develop organizations to be more socially conscious and rectify historical and contemporary inequities. It introduces some methods that can act as tools to help you make sense of how organizations operate. When people refer to organizations in daily conversations with coworkers, they often talk about them abstractly. Workers might complain that their organizations do not invest sufficient funds to ensure the continuing development of employees-development that may ultimately contribute toward the organization’s sustainability. But there are alternative organizations that do not fit neatly into these sectors and are not necessarily organized in a hierarchical, managed structure. Gareth Morgan proposed that organizations can be understood as metaphors too. He suggested eight different metaphors that capture the essence of organizations.
