ABSTRACT

Interviewing techniques differ immensely from country to country, but also from organization to organization, and even from recruiter to recruiter. As an international student the prospect of being interviewed is particularly daunting. Speaking in a language that may not be your native tongue you will be in situations where you are unsure about what to expect. On top of all that, you want to demonstrate that your international studies have given you special skills and knowledge.

This chapter outlines the eight major interview types along with the typical questions asked in each. In fact, there is a relatively small number of questions that you will encounter in any interview. As with writing exams, the key to a successful interview is to understand the questions. The chapter decodes the ten questions you are most likely to be asked during an interview and demonstrates how to respond. Included in the chapter are responses to difficult questions that you might be asked in an interview, such as about future plans.

The last part of the chapter explains who you should ask to be references, how to prepare on the day of the interview, and the steps to take immediately after the interview, including sending a thank you note.
