ABSTRACT

This session gives the young person an overview of where they have lived geographically. It shows the transitions to different places. In many ways, this can be a good starting point to talking about their life in the past. It is factual, but conversations will inevitably come about through it about why changes of placement and so on occurred. The map activity in itself is quite factual and tends not to be quite so emotionally charged as other sessions might be. Actually seeing the places and being near the places where difficult times happened can bring back floods of memories and uncomfortable emotions. Sometimes it can be helpful to physically go to the places and do a road trip round where the young person lived. It is important to bear in mind that some addresses will hold distressing memories for the young person, perhaps some memories that they have not yet disclosed.
