ABSTRACT
Acquiring rights to recorded music is complicated, labor-intensive, and expensive, which is why documentary filmmakers might turn to royalty-free options (see Chapter 16: ‘Finding Ready-Recorded Music’). The alternative is commissioning original music, which has two big advantages: it solves the clearance problem and makes your film musically unique. It need not be ruinously expensive.
