ABSTRACT

The trend incorporates a broader spectrum of interventions to include work-life balance initiatives which are believed to contribute to greater employee well-being. This chapter explores how the construct develops over time, from childhood, and how early life impacts on an adult’s life perceptions, choices, personality, and behaviour. It distinguishes between those that have an external locus of control orientation and those who tend to maintain an internal locus of control. The chapter provides case exemplars to illustrate some of the challenges clients face, including organisational and country culture; and offers a range of tools and techniques to support the development of clients’ internal locus of control. In family life, their ability to negotiate will influence other important factors of work-life balance and life satisfaction such as discussing mutual financial responsibilities, how they wish to raise their children, and the sharing of domestic responsibilities with their partner.
