ABSTRACT

As counselors work with their schools and collaborate with staff to become trauma-sensitive, one central question will arise:

“Now that we have this new trauma-sensitive philosophy, we sense the urgency to address trauma. Now what do we DO?”

This chapter discusses schoolwide programs that are trauma-sensitive and address students’ academic, social-emotional, and behavioral needs. These programs include Response to Intervention (RTI), Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports (PBIS), Restorative Practices (RPs), Multi-Tiered Systems of Support (MTSS), and Social-Emotional Learning (SEL). This chapter gives school counselors an overview of the programs and discusses how each program’s goals and key elements align with a trauma-sensitive school philosophy. These are examples of programs that could be used but none are required or officially endorsed.
