ABSTRACT

The chapter on Identity corresponds to the Cambridge Dictionary definition ‘Who a person is, or the qualities of a person or group that make them different from others’. In addition to his role as a popular musician, Weller is variously known as a modernist, a Londoner, an activist and as a non-conformist, and in the chapter on identity, these integral aspects are discussed. A contested area due to the complexities of social integration and personal meaning, the study of identity is synonymous with culture and allegiance. Research over time indicates that the groups to which we belong are an important part of our social identity and that they significantly shape both our sense of belonging and our sense of self. An artist whose persona encompasses a number of qualities that combine to make him different from others, Weller is argued to possess what might be considered a prismatic identity.
