ABSTRACT

Alcohol dependency has many other complications and attendant psychological/physical problems. For the purpose of the workplace, the employer has to be seen to manage the problem within the employee’s Fiduciary Duty to be Fit for Work. Depending on the nature of the individual and their journey through their drink-related issues there are a variety of ways to deal with alcohol misuse, many of which can be applied while in employment, but monitored for insurance risk and other legislation risk-related circumstances. Cognitive behavioural therapy is a talking therapy that uses a problem-solving approach to alcohol dependence. There are a number of ways to test for alcohol in the body. As with substance misuse testing, those methods can detect recent use as well as historical/cumulative misuse. The Employee Assistance Programme is a consideration to be applied for alcohol misuse, where employers have such a provision to employees. As with substance misuse, people can default into alcohol misuse for a great many reasons.
