ABSTRACT

This chapter considers visual artistic production in various media, including painting, photography, installation, video and film. Whereas artists in the past tended to work in only one medium, most artists now work in different media and sometimes create works that stretch over more than one medium. It aims to identify what could be called “moments of criticality”. By using the term “moment”, the chapter aims to draw attention to the fact that artists produce works that address a wide variety of subjects and not all works might be “critical” or “committed”. It focuses on works that go beyond the simple narratives of refugees’ plight or the glory of resistance fighters. The chapter discusses the issue of conflict between the individual and society, with an emphasis on questions of gender and gender-normativity as they are viewed by Syrian mainstream society.
