ABSTRACT

Gross domestic product (GDP) can be an important means of promoting well-being. A country with high GDP per person (GDP per capita) is usually able to provide its citizens with quality health care, food security, national defense, and a cleaner environment. Increasing GDP levels may be particularly important in contexts where people lack sufficient financial resources to meet their basic needs. Money is the standard of value that has traditionally been used in economics. Specifically, the commonest economic definition of value has been that of market value-that is, price. The most basic living standard issues relate to the quality of people’s diets and housing, their access to means of transportation and communication, and the quality of medical attention that they receive.
