ABSTRACT

Guided math groups should take place within a mathematically rich environment. There are many components of a numerate environment that engage students in thinking flexibly about numbers, in sharing their thinking out loud, and in reflecting on their own learning. In a Math Workshop, students have multiple encounters with math throughout the workshop in various learning situations: individually, in partners, in groups, and with the whole class. During Math Workshop, practice is distributed over time so that students revisit skills in meaningful, engaging ways and become confident mathematicians.
