ABSTRACT

Guided math groups are the perfect space to build mathematical proficiency. Teachers can take their time to build conceptual understanding, check for procedural fluency, and give students the time to talk and show their thinking. Students get to actually reason out loud, and they get to listen to others and then synthesize all of that information to see if it really makes sense to them. They also get to engage as mathematicians, taking risks, sharing ideas, and showing their work in a small risk-taking setting that thrives on opportunity.
