ABSTRACT

From the first step future police officers take into the formal training atmosphere of a training academy their indoctrination and institutionalization into the police subculture begins. They will learn the “language”—specialized jargon; they will be pressed into the “blue wall of silence” code of never “snitching” on another officer; their on-duty personalities may conflict or change from their pre-law enforcement days to a more insensitive, aggressive-defensive manner to protect their real inner emotions; they will develop a mindset of being a warrior in the battle of crime, justice, and punishment. Over the course of a 20-year career, their personalities will undergo maturation along with learned aggression and apprehension of various phases of policing related to good and bad experiences.
