ABSTRACT

We all have fear. Fear is an irrational emotional response. Fear is an emotion that holds us back from full potential. “Fear is not real. It is the product of thoughts you create. Danger is very real, but fear is a choice”—Advice from a retired Los Angeles County Deputy Sheriff. We must be careful not to mistake danger for fear. In order to better put society’s fear of law enforcement to rest, law enforcement officials (and patrol officers) must better communicate with society. The fear society has toward law enforcement is a failure of both sides. Although police officers believe their actions are for the betterment of society, they must never forget to stop and talk to the citizens to remind them that police are not the bogeyman, but a human resource to protect them from the evils of the world and to preserve humanity.
