ABSTRACT
I have decided not to provide a full bibliography. My sources should be obvious from the notes at the end of each chapter. I have none the less provided fuller information about archival sources, but have refrained from mentioning every file that I consulted. The archives of the German Democratic Republic have not been used since I have twice been refused access to them. As for published sources and secondary literature, I have listed only those works that were most important and most relevant to my central theme. I have, however, referred readers to the bibliographies of two excellent recent books for older literature.
