ABSTRACT

The frame controls the amount of information the viewer is given and how the viewer focuses on that information. Framing can re-enforce or negate a sense of more “things going on” outside of the frame. Framing is an act of choosing what is and is not of interest. To more completely understand the power of framing, this method asks the photographer to frame and then reframe the subject matter of interest in multiple ways. The photographer experiments as a way to understand the power of framing. By making and then viewing alternative framings, the photographer is able to see how perception of the subject matter can be shifted through framing. As landscape architects and environmental designers, it is essential to think about both what is in the frame and what is outside of the frame. When working with communities, clients or stakeholders, this can become an activity for sharing stories and ideas about characteristics and relationships in a landscape.
