ABSTRACT

The final chapter reviews the two main goals of the book and how they have been addressed through the various discussions, examples and case studies: cultural mega-events as a distinct phenomenon impacting cities in significant ways and the effects these events (and other types of mega-events) can have on heritage. The chapter describes the specific ways that cultural mega-events like the European Capital of Culture can be used as heritage tools to meet a number of heritage goals. It then considers some of the specific knowledge that could be shared across other mega-events, namely those also spread throughout existing urban fabric. The chapter also calls on a range of decision makers from local to international levels to consider and implement policies addressing the potential threats and opportunities to heritage presented by mega-events. Finally, the chapter concludes the book by proposing future research that should be conducted to expand collective knowledge regarding these issues.
