ABSTRACT

A country’s development is often epitomised with the communication revolution of the1980s and the digital revolution since the 1990s. Among the e-waste management parlance, some are common concerns across the globe while some are nation specific. The chapter is presented in five sections: the first section covers details about e-waste, its composition, definition and components of e-waste management. The second section explains role of statistics in e-waste management; statistics on e-waste cover its generation, collection and recycling, flow and transboundary movements, countries covered under legislation and adoption of extended producer responsibility, GHG emissions and economic value of e-waste. The third section provides an overview on the status of e-waste related legislation across the globe, its trends and challenges. The fourth section provides overview on initiatives taken by the United Nations, and e-waste linked to the Agenda 2030/Sustainable Development Goals to provide global overview, and to link nation specific assignments and obligations for e‑waste management and increasing thrust on circular economy. The fifth section presents Indian scenario with statistical information and legislation details, essentials of cohesive e-waste management thinking, informal e‑waste trade chain and opportunities and challenges of e-waste management.
