ABSTRACT

The science of economics, which is concerned with the use of scarce resources for the satisfaction of wants, is of great significance in all commercial activities undertaken for profit. One of the major economic principles useful in achieving profitable production is to produce the right goods as cheaply as possible. In farming, more than in any other occupation, taking action at the appropriate time is highly essential for any profitable return. For any commercial farmer, i.e. a farmer producing profitably for the market, there are three stages to follow: the thought process; decisions to be made; and actions to be taken. Farming calls for hard work, most of which is influenced or dictated by weather, climate and the environment. Therefore going into farming needs careful thought; making a profit of farming needs more careful thought. In farming, whether for profit or for home consumption, a number of important sets of decisions have to be taken.
