ABSTRACT

One area of livestock development for West Africa where great progress can be made lies in the integrated livestock/ mixed-farming system, whereby livestock men are settled and cultivate pasture. From recorded history, cattle in West Africa originate from a series of nomadic migrations from western Asia through Egypt. The most important aspect of livestock raising is for milk and meat production. Feeding consists mainly of nuts, grains seeds and feeds given in balanced small quantities twice daily, but supplemented with grass and legume mixtures and abundant water. Pig pens should always have sleeping floors and a separate feeding area with feeding and water troughs. From recorded history, cattle in West Africa originate from a series of nomadic migrations from western Asia through Egypt. Sheep are kept in West Africa mainly for mutton, with sheepskin of course as a useful by-product.
