ABSTRACT

Communication involves one person transmitting a message to at least one other person via verbal or non-verbal means. Bogdashina (2004) outlines five essential elements for communication to take place:

A sender

Someone to receive the message

A message to communicate

A desire to communicate

A mode to send that message, for example through words, sign language, picture exchange or an electronic device.

An autistic person may experience difficulties with any one of these steps, and often several.
