ABSTRACT

Sensory processing is the ability to receive and respond to sensory input from the external environment and from within our bodies. Dr A. Jean Ayres, who conceptualised Sensory Integration theory, defined it as:

The neurological process that organizes sensation from one’s own body and from the environment and makes it possible to use the body effectively within the environment.

(Ayres, 1989, p. 11) Sensory input is processed by the central nervous system in a complex sequence which involves receiving, registering, modulating, integrating and interpreting sensory stimuli and then formulating and executing an appropriate motor response.
