ABSTRACT

This chapter introduces a briefer way of working that brings together the close attention of therapeutic observation with a more directive focus on child-led play. Watch Me Play! involves learning from play that is led by the child. Creating an environment for play involves opportunities for the child to experience the undivided attention of his or her caregiver, who provides a quiet environment and a selection of toys that promote self-expression. This approach also brings together adults who are involved with the child to reflect on their observations of the child’s play. Watch Me Play! has been described by a child’s social worker as “an opportunity for the voice of the child to be heard through their play”. The approach is illustrated through a series of case examples, highlighting the value of close, one-to-one attention for children who have experienced abuse and neglect. The chapter also discusses ways in which a focus on play can help professionals to remain hopeful and to take in the reality of children’s distress without being overwhelmed by it.
