ABSTRACT

This final chapter provides an overview of the results and analyses of the empirical studies underlying this book. The results and analyses suggest that English-language classrooms have to focus more on English for academic purposes (EAP) to help students be better prepared to take English-medium instruction (EMI). Regarding EMI classrooms, assigning Japanese students in groups with international students, utilizing online discussion forums in Japanese and English could make EMI a safe place for them to do their best. Also, language instruction should be provided in EMI classrooms, since that would help students better understand the lectures, thereby motivating them. Furthermore, class size for EMI should be small, and teaching assistants should be provided by universities to maximize student learning opportunities. Although there are several limitations, and more research must be conducted to make EMI more fruitful for Japanese students, this book contributes to advancing pedagogy of EMI by exploring EMI from the viewpoint of Japanese students’ motivation.
