ABSTRACT

Observation involves careful watching or listening. The art of observation can be formal or informal and is driven by your own volition. Observation consists of taking note of specific facts or behaviors and recognizing patterns – or the lack of patterns. It may include making a mental note of something or taking notes. Observational learning describes the process of learning by watching or observing others, retaining the information, and then later replicating the behaviors that were seen. Observation is usually combined with other learning tools such as networking, journaling, and day-to-day interactions. Chapter 8 provides a roadmap of how to approach observation systematically and effectively to develop your managerial behavior. The science behind observation is discussed in a practical way followed by the who, what, where, why, and when components of observation. An approach to developing an observation schedule is offered.
