ABSTRACT

In this chapter, special situations are discussed where creating a caring and task-involving climate is particularly important for athletes. Discussion centers around athletes who are low skilled, have less social support outside the team, have fewer opportunities to participate in physical activity or positive youth development programs, experience injuries, and have challenging lives. While the creation of a caring and task-involving climate is beneficial to all athletes, it may be even more critical for those in these special circumstances. Many examples of young people being impacted by coaches who create a caring and task-involving climate are provided in this chapter.
