ABSTRACT

The only edition of Richard Brathwait's Whimsies: Or,A New Cast of Characters appeared in 1631. It comprises twenty-four characters with an additional four characters in a separately-titled section called A Cater-Character, throwne out of a Boxe By an Experienc'd Gamester. The title page reads;

Whimzies: | OR, | A NEW | CAST OF | CHARAC- | TERS. || Nova, non nota deleetant. || [ornament] I LONDON, | Printed by F.K. and are | to be sold by Ambrose Rithir- | don at the signe of the Bulls- | head in Pauls Church- | yard. 1631.

The section title on sig. K8r reads:

A | CATER- | CHARACTER, | throwne out of a | Boxe | By an Experienc'd | Gamester. || —Ova prognatus ab uno. || I. An Apparator. | 2. A Painter. | 3. A Pedler. | 4. A Piper.|| LONDON | Imprinted by F. K. and | are to be sold by R. B. | 1631.

The Bodleian copy and one of the three Harvard copies have a variant title page:
