ABSTRACT

This chapter explains how to start with students' dissertation by posing the right questions. Often the dissertation involves many months of work, and it is important that students manage their time effectively and be well organised. Selecting a topic for students' dissertation, like choosing where to go on holiday, is not always easy and can require a lot of thought. Some people are fortunate: an idea for a dissertation may pop into their mind immediately. A key part of success in dissertation-writing is being organised and systematic in students' approach, and the earlier they can adopt this, the better. It is found that keeping a research diary, where students can also record their thoughts, can prove particularly useful. Brainstorming the key research questions, concepts, themes and thoughts will give students some idea of the scale of the task ahead. Students' may consider producing a timeline to outline the main stages of development in their project.
