ABSTRACT
The African Union (AU) has a broad range of policies and programs whose aims are fundamentally preventive. The AU’s work on environment, climate change, water, land, and natural resources aims at advancing Africa’s Climate Change Agenda, including supporting the continent’s negotiations on climate change at the global level, and advancing the African Common Position on Climate Change and the formulation of an African Climate Change Strategy. The AU common defense policy has identified weapons of mass destruction as common threat facing all member states that should be addressed in a collective manner. The AU is faced with repeated, persistent, and complex conflicts on the continent, in response to which it engages in crisis management while developing an elaborate, multi-pronged strategy for the long-term prevention of conflicts. The AU has an African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights and an African Court on Human Rights. The topic of minority protection in Africa is one that deserves close attention in the future.
