ABSTRACT

The purpose of this book has been to compare and reconcile the art and science of lighting for live, staged events and productions with lighting for multi-camera streamed, broadcasted, or IMAG’d live productions. Both formats share the configuration of a stage presentation with an audience, but the latter is fashioned to work for the camera with the highest degree of quality, as well as for the live audience. Also, we have come to acknowledge today’s reality that, planned or not, cameras are capturing it all for unsolicited appearances on worldwide social media. The aesthetic has shifted. An understanding of the techniques and art of making live events translates effectively through the eye of the camera and onto the screen, while retaining the excitement and immediacy of the in-person performance experience. This book has been a loving exploration of lighting for the live-for-broadcast artform that continues to evolve along with ever-advancing technology and culture.
