ABSTRACT

Chapter 4 explores how children develop their social identities; the aspects of the self that signify the ways in which people are the same as some and different from others. It sets out theories of gender identity development and ‘racial’ or ethnic identity development and then goes on to discuss the impact of stereotypes and prejudice on 0–3-year-olds and invites educators to reflect on their own experiences of social inequalities. Chapter 4 also explores ideas of culture and multiculturalism and how educators can support a positive sense of self in young children through implementing an anti-bias approach in their practice and provision.
