ABSTRACT

Chapter 1.1 focuses on the skills and attributes needed by leaders of birth-to-three provision. Leading and managing an early years setting is a demanding and complex role which requires diverse skills and a broad range of knowledge. Leading a setting that provides well for 0–3-year-olds means ensuring that those skills and areas of knowledge encompass elements of provision and aspects of practice that specifically support babies and 1- and 2-year-olds. This chapter therefore, explores ideas of what leading and managing is and the importance of developing a team vision that is based on clear pedagogical principles and equity and that best supports the youngest children. It suggests the use of positive evaluation tools as effective methods to review and improve provision. Chapter 1.1 also emphasises the importance of leadership support for educators through reflective supervision, of leaders looking after their own well-being and of leaders being advocates for children, parents and educators.
