ABSTRACT

From 2010 onwards, the European Union has found itself in one of the greatest crises since its emergence. The euro crisis, the sovereign debt crisis experienced by some member states, the economic crisis, and the refugee crisis have all challenged the strength of European solidarity between European citizens and also between the member states of the European Union. Many politicians and scientists claim that European solidarity is poorly developed and is buckling further under the pressure of the crises. However, there is a lack of scientific research with a clear conceptual framework and a systematic approach that would allow scholars to determine the strength of European solidarity. In this chapter, we briefly outline how the different crises of the EU relate to different domains of solidarity. We also introduce a new and unique conceptualisation of European solidarity. In addition, the chapter gives a short summary of the book’s content.
