ABSTRACT

Eliminating oppression and the consequent divisions that exist between groups of people is a multi-faceted journey that requires the engagement of many minds. Developing healing partnerships within and across racial and cultural lines is a key factor in dismantling the targeting of oppressed groups and the conditioning of those in the oppressor role. This process also illuminates elegant solutions to human and environmental challenges. As we discover each other’s hearts and minds across racial and cultural lines, broken health and social care systems can be re-created. Despite our acts of inhumanity towards each other, humans have an inherent tendency towards caring, empathy, and cooperation. No one is born wishing to someday oppress others or be the victim of oppression, but in current societies, people are socialized to take on both roles. Skilful and aware listening to each other’s experiences related to oppression promotes healing and uplifts lives. Members of oppressed groups are empowered to recognize and reject internalized oppression, and people in oppressor roles can discard the immobilizing forces of isolation, disconnection, and guilt. Creativity and collaboration are unleashed and unity within and across racial and cultural lines emboldens transformative actions to eliminate oppression and treasure all life.
