ABSTRACT

Humans are both homo sapiens and homo emotus. We possess tremendous intellectual potential. We also feel deeply. When we are hurting physically or emotionally, our intelligence, our capacity to respond flexibly to each new situation, is diminished. Outpourings of both thoughts and feelings (grief, fear, embarrassment, resentment, tension, etc.) to a trusted ally signal healing and the recovery of flexible intelligence, yet this natural process is often inhibited. The aligned practitioner can support healing from emotional and physical hurts by listening on multiple levels to verbal, non-verbal, and emotional expression. Reflection and validation of thoughts, feelings, and experiences allow important information, stories, and concerns to unfold. Encouraging laughter, shaking, and tears deepens a sense of alignment and possibilities. Summaries and clarifications ensure we have correctly understood key concerns and can contradict feelings of isolation. Acknowledging that we cannot fully put ourselves in the shoes of someone with a particular illness, disability, life circumstance, or racial and cultural background, but wish to understand their experiences, opens the door to deeper connection and healing. Exploring barriers to emotional expression and un-numbing to our own painful experiences in confidential listening partnerships enhances our ability to support the healing process in others.
