ABSTRACT

In analysis, there is a position of openness that the analyst adopts that allows for the positive growth of the patient through allowing themselves to be affected by the patient and makes the patient’s objects a part of the analyst’s own inner life. These are more benign forms of symbiont living through therapeutic symbiosis. In its more malignant forms, a parasitic form of object relating takes hold wherein the analyst will feel invaded, taken over, kidnapped or negated before he is able to apply the use of his own mind to the patient’s primitive projected contents.
