ABSTRACT

Long after the Joint Enrichment Project (JEP) existed as an institution, it was still operating in hidden ways—in youth and community development projects across South Africa, and in the work of former staff. This chapter opens with the story of JEP's former finance manager looking back on JEP's last days. JEP's impact on the youth development landscape in South Africa is then summarized. The chapter then zooms out to consider the fragmentation of the contemporary youth development landscape. It looks at some recent initiatives, including those of some former JEP staff, and explores how they both reflect and extend the work of JEP. Taken together, these initiatives (YouthBuild South Africa, Community Work, Intselelo, Harambee Youth Employment Accelerator, Katura, and a dual-training initiative of the German government) suggest a reframing of learning in the youth development arena in which building social capital is as important as building individual human capital.
